November is always a tricky one for cake club. We've just had the excitement of Halloween, and unless you're very early in the month, Bonfire Night has fizzled out like a bit of a damp sparkler, and it's not close enough for Christmas. Everyone's skint because festive gift buying is well underway, so I decided on a slightly different theme... a bit of a 'by the seat of your pants free for all' type of thing.
Last month I asked our cake clubbers how much they spent on their average cake. The answer was staggering! Most spent upwards of about £10 on top of what they already had in the cupboards and fridge. So, I gave our members a challenge. They could bake whatever they wanted, but had a budget of just £5 (or a 'deep sea diver'). Store cupboard items were exempt, because I wanted to encourage them to use what they already had in.
We returned to one of our favourite venues, Thyme Deli in Horwich. Amanda and her team were our first ever hosts, and have been incredibly supportive of our club over the past year or so. They love to come and look at the cakes, join us for a slice (or five), and of course are also incredible hosts. So thank you to our Thyme buddies! I'd encourage any local folk to nip down and see all the amazing Christmas goodies they have in too.
Our meeting was only a small and intimate one this month, so it was a rather relaxed affair. The theme meant that we had a really good mixture of cakes too. We had eleven in total, including:
- Lancashire Cheese and Apple Cake
- Piernik (Polish ginger cake)
- Autumnal Spiced Apple Cake
- Lemon and Poppyseed Cake
- Death by Chocolate
- Lemon and Lime Ripple Bundt Cake
- Chocolate Mint Cake
- Coconut Cake
- Orange and Cardamom Drizzle Cake
- Chocolate Orange Fudge Cake
- Lemon Drizzle Cake
Another huge thanks to Amanda and her team at Thyme for squeezing us in when they were already mad busy!
Next month's meeting is live over at the Clandestine Cake Club website - it's our special Christmas themed meeting, Jingle Bell Rock!
