The Northern Quarter Restaurant, NQ Manchester

I'm scared of the Northern Quarter. It can all be a bit hip and 'down with the kids'. However, recent trips to lovely establishments such as Home Sweet Home and Sugar Junction have given me the confidence to go forth! Normal people appear to frequent these places too! It's ok.... (breathes into paper bag)
Last week I asked Twitter which restaurants do the best desserts in the North West. Lots of people were suggesting places that I had already been to, but I really wanted to try somewhere new. Quite a few suggested the Northern Quarter Restaurant, so off we trot!

We got there quite early, but it became clear from the shouts of 'two burgers, one sticks one ched!' (I will explain this lingo later...) that the burger was a popular choice! We went here on Saturday, so that would have meant two burgers in two days. Oh to hell with the diet, I'll behave during the week! The burger comes with a choice of either Blacksticks Blue cheese or mature cheddar (thus the 'sticks and ched'). We tried both, just to be on the safe side...

This burger was totally different to the one I had the night before at Suzanna's. Both special in their own little way... The chips were lovely and crispy (I can't abide a soggy chip!) and the burger came with some spicy tomato relish. What was really nice was the portion sizes. We went for lunch, so this was enough to fill the sizeable hole created by shopping, but didn't immobilise me for the rest of the day! Their lunch menu is really reasonable too, it was £12.95 for two courses or £15.95 for three.

Once again, it was the promise of desserts that had led me into this restaurant, so I wasn't leaving without sampling their wares! My husband had crème brûlée and I had sticky toffee pudding.

The brûlée was thick and full of flavour, and came served with a berry compote and biscotti.
The sticky toffee pudding (to quote Greg) was laaaavly! Really light sponge served with a thick toffee sauce and ice cream. I could eat this every day of my life. That and the assiette. And Jason Atherton's Pistachio Financier. OK, I'm a total dessert piglet.
A rather enjoyable lunch indeed, and great value. I'd love to go back in the evening to sample the à la carte menu. I get the feeling that this takes on a slightly more sophisticated feel. Highly recommended if you like a good dessert too...

Cupboard hell to storage heaven!

I've got to that point where no amount of cupboard tidying can keep my collection of baking goods organised. Nordic Ware and cake stands live on top of my cupboards, I have a spice shelf, essences colours and raising agents aso have a shelf of their own, a cupboard dedicated to tins and hundreds of rogue cases, adornments and cutters! It's got out of hand! The more I tidy, the less in control I feel. I decided I needed either:
a - a lottery win to fund my new massive house with a gigantic kitchen
b - better storage

After Lotto let me down horribly, I started looking for some sort of boxes to keep said rogue items in. How rubbish is normal storage?! Boring! I mean, Lock n Lock has its place, but I wanted something a little more interesting. After almost giving up and contemplating life as the junk lady from Labyrinth or a Mr Trebus tribute act, I found these!

They are actually gift boxes from Paperchase. I bought the large ones, which at £4.25 a pop, aren't as expensive as some of the plain kitchen ones either. They are part of the vintage style Prairie Rose collection, which starts at just £2. Perfect for prezzies or cookie cutters!

Disclaimer: Paperchase did not ask me to review this product. It was a genuine find after a genuine cupboard emergency...

Suzanna's, Little Scotland

As a child I was fascinated by Little Scotland. We used to drive through on our way to Aspull when I went out with my grandparents. It was little because it was literally a tiny country lane, but I'm not sure about the Scotland bit...

In the middle of rambling fields and winding lanes you will find Suzanna's. Just outside Blackrod, and very much a step back in time to the bit that escaped development.

I remember this building being Gallagher's, a friend of my grandad's. Funnily enough, although I was aware of its presence for many years, I don't actually know anyone who went there, perhaps that is why it is now Suzanna's!

After visiting the restaurant with cake club I couldn't wait to go and try the new menu. I called the very next day for a reservation! The decor and staff had already won me over, so I had high expectations for the food. Suzanna is a lovely lady; passionate about her work, the food and her family, but also well travelled and has eaten at some of my favourite restaurants. I was sure this was going to be a good experience! Likewise, her chef Mike has worked for some big names such as Gary Rhodes, Shaun Rankin and Lancashire's own Nigel Haworth.
They didn't let me down. My husband and I went on Friday night. I had been dreaming of the assiette of desserts that she had teased me with on Monday...

We started with a small aperitif, not something I expected for a restaurant nestled between Blackrod and Haigh! It was a piece of ham terrine with a lovely quail scotch egg on top.
We didn't have starters because we both fancied a dessert (some piglet might have been out for lunch as well...) My husband had the Pork Three Ways, and I opted for the burger. I always find a burger is a good test of a restaurant. Easy to get right, but equally easy to make a right pig's ear of it.
Both were lovely. What Suzanna's seem to be able to do is serve homely food, but they also capture enough of the fine dining element to make the trip feel a little more special than your average town restaurant.
My burger was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. They make their own burger sauce too. The skinny fries were really tasty, and I particularly liked the fact they had their skin on.
The pork dish includes a fillet wrapped in bacon, confit belly and ham hock terrine. It's served with dauphinoise potatoes and a local cider sauce.

If I'm being honest, I could have quite happily just gone to Suzanna's for desserts. Reading through the menu, I could have easily tried everything they had to offer! Traditional desserts, all homemade, all tempting me... Then there is the assiette. One of almost everything on the menu. I was dreaming of this all day whilst being dragged round the Trafford Centre by my mother...

This is one of my favourite desserts ever. It's a true tasting platter! None of this trio malarky!
From left to right (clockwise) we have trifle, bakewell tart, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon ice cream, sticky toffee pudding, lemon tart and carrot cake. We 'shared' it. I have no shame in telling you that I could have devoured the entire plate myself. I loved it.

I would happily recommend Suzanna's. We had a relaxing evening with great food. We'll definitely be making a return visit!
