Bouchon Bakery, New York

Bouchon Bakery, New York
Last year we went for breakfast at Thomas Keller's Bouchon in Las Vegas, and absolutely loved it! When we booked New York, I was keen to go and sample Bouchon Bakery at Rockefeller Plaza, to sample their baked delights.

When you walk through the doors of Bouchon Bakery, your eyes are met by what appears to be hundreds of jewelled cakes, including macarons, madeleines, cheesecakes, cookies, pastries, and even a bundt cake...

There was only ever going to be one choice for me; the spiced apple bundt cake with hot chocolate. This is one of my favourite bundts ever. It was moist, spicy and had a crisp sugar crust. My husband decided french was the way forward, and had a ham and cheese croissant with coffee. It may not look too pretty on the picture below, but it was absolutely delicious!

If Thomas Keller is behind it, it's always going to be great, but that bundt cake is going to stay on my 'what could you just eat?' list for some time to come...

Momofuku Milk Bar, New York

Momofuku Milk Bar, New York
New York winter mornings are the best. We had some beautiful weather, albeit perishingly cold at times. The sun is bright, the wind is brisk and the skies are clear. Really puts you in the mood for some Crack Pie...
New York Morning
Momofuku Milk Bar, New YorkMomofuku Milk Bar has been on my to do list for a very long time indeed. Famed for their Crack Pie and Cereal Milk, they seemed the obvious breakfast choice on our first morning in the Big Apple. You may think this behaviour is ridiculous, but I assure this is common practice in our household. I don't have that reflex which tells normal people what is suitable for specific times of day - I had curry for breakfast in Mauritius...
Momofuku Milk Bar, New York
Momofuku Milk Bar is a bit like walking into any other coffee shop, but a closer look at the menu reveals a variety of unusual options and a rather cheeky sense of humour.

Cornflake chocolate chip marshmallow cookie: This seemed suitable for breakfast as it had cornflakes in it. Tenuous, I know. This was wonderfully chewy and sticky cookie with big chocolate chips. I managed about two thirds before giving up. However, it was a lovely surprise to find the rest in my handbag when looking for lip balm at 4am the next morning.. Jetlag eh...?

Crack Pie: It had to be done. This is a bit like a brown sugar tart; gooey, sweet and very tasty indeed. Not for the faint-hearted.

Cereal milk and pretzel shake: Cereal milk tastes exactly like the remaining liquor from a bowl of Frosties c.1991. That's the only way I can describe it. Not only is it sickly sweet, but it also manages to capture the pure nostalgia that is watching the Micky Mouse Club at Jenny's house in our pyjamas on a Saturday morning.  Pretzel milk is a little more grown up. Sweet yet slightly salty - the same sort of morish feeling you get from eating one cheesy chip and then wanting to devour the whole lot.

We ended up eating our breakfast confectionary in the hotel lobby to which Milk Bar is attached, as there are no seats in the shop itself and it was way too cold to consider drinking a milkshake outside! There's nothing ground breaking going on here, but it's a fun little place to try.

Levain Bakery, New York

Levain Bakery, New York
When I'm planning a trip, food is always at the forefront of my mind. The sweet stuff will always triumph over savoury, so when we booked New York, I set about researching the Big Apple's finest bakeries. Lots of people had recommended the famous Magnolia Bakery, but I was also looking for the slightly obscure, hiding in little back streets. Cue Levain Bakery

Levain is a decent trek up to West 74th Street, which is past Central Park in Upper West Side - a bit out of the way, but well worth it for any cake tourist. It's in a really cute neighbourhood full of town houses and smart offices - very Sex and the City!
Upper West Side Pumpkins!
West 74th Street itself is very unassuming, and you could easily glide on by Levain without even noticing it. It's down some steep stairs and actually looks quite dingy from the outside. However, step into their little bakery haven and the light gushes through the window from street level.
Levain Bakery, New York
The shop is tiny, but has a good selection of breads, cakes and pastries; but we were there for their famous cookies.
Levain Bakery, New York
These cookies are like nothing I have ever seen before. They look a bit like our rock cakes or scones, but are made from cookie dough, so have a wonderfully sticky centre.

We both opted for an oatmeal and raisin one - Millie's Cookies better start running now! My mouth is watering just reminiscing about these little marvels. They are crisp on the outside and delightfully gooey on the inside without tasting raw. It was bitterly cold outside when we arrived, but were toasty warm with bellies full of hot coffee and cookie when we left.

It's worth nothing that the staff were delightful too. They were more than happy with a slightly mental English tourist taking pictures of their wares! If you're going to New York and you like the sweet stuff - get your backside to Levain!

Magnolia Bakery, New York

Magnolia Bakery, New York
Bakers know it as a legendary place which inspired the likes of the London institutions Primrose and Hummingbird... I know that it sends my sister-in-law into fits of excitement every time its name is uttered... It's the one and only Magnolia Bakery. We visited the day that we went to the Rockefeller Centre, when we had just had breakfast at Bouchon Bakery, so we got cakeaway for later.
Magnolia Bakery, New York
In a city where everyone's in a rush, and apparently no-one sleeps, customer service and friendliness is sometimes lacking. Magnolia was one of the exceptions. I walked through the door to see shelves stacked with jars of sprinkles, odd pumpkins, pretty pastel books, and vast amounts of cakes. I thought they would be all about the cupcake (boo to cupcakes), but I was pleased to see a wide variety of different buns, cakes, biscuits and pies.

The staff were quite happy for me to stand taking pictures, and shared my excitement when I saw that familiar shape that is a bundt cake. After confessing my obsession with said cakes, I ordered a slice of their lemon vanilla bundt, and a small cinnamon bun for good measure. The cinnamon buns looked a bit like a Duffin from Bea's of Bloomsbury, so I had to sample one - research...
Magnolia Bakery, New York
After an exhausting day of walking many miles, eating lots of lovely food and drinking lots of craft beer, we headed back to the hotel and collapsed on the bed. After a bit of a power nap (an hour and a half...) I awoke to realise were were not in Hooters as planned, but had overslept and now had no energy whatsoever. Whilst I let my husband sleep, I remembered the bag of goodies at the foot of the bed!
Magnolia Bakery, New York
The bundt had a nice sugar crust on the bottom, but was quite heavy in texture and didn't have much of a lemon flavour. Perhaps I'm a really harsh critic, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. The cinnamon bun on the other hand was beautiful. A little denser than a Duffin, but very tasty nevertheless.

I'd definitely recommend a trip to this pretty little shop, but I think having tasted so many amazing cakes I did expect a little more. Next time I'd be tempted to try their biscuits and muffins, although I have to say that their cinnamon buns make an excellent post-trek treat. If you live in the UK, try Bea's of Bloomsbury instead...

Gail's Artisan Bakery, London

Gail's Artisan Bakery, London
So I was in London. All alone... Wandering round like a lost little sheep, only I wasn't lost, I was on Wardour Street; home to the Hummingbird Bakery and gateway to a couple of pubs we've frequented. So why have I never noticed Gail's Artisan Bakery? The chatty lady in the shop told me there are now fifteen of them across the city, yet I have missed them all. I decided to to make up for lost time...
Gail's Artisan Bakery, London
The window was full of freshly baked bread, pastries, loaf cakes, cookies and more importantly... financiers! I'd abandoned my original idea of a burger for lunch within seconds.

Hot chocolate: Hot, frothy and not too sweet. Luckily I was sat in the window which allowed me to see that I had a chin full of chocolate dust before I made a prized prat of myself.

Sultana and Cinnamon Kugelhopf: Not a traditional kugelhopf per se, but I'm willing to cut them some slack because it was so spectacular. Absolutely delectable! This is more like a soft doughnut filled with juicy fruit and doused in sugar. Everything I love about cake was in this item.

Pear Juice: A nice change from the norm, and very refreshing after a long trek to Smithfield and back!

Raspberry Financier: Financiers are one of my favourite cakes ever. This was moist with a nice almond edge, however lacked the nice chewiness that Trove managed to achieve with theirs. Still very pleasant indeed!

A lovely little pit stop for a weary shopper in need of some TLC (and a cake).

Trove, Levenshulme

Trove, Levenshulme
A few weeks ago my blogging amigo, Mr Hoss sent me a picture of a familiar looking cake. It was round with a hole in the middle 'like a polo' (he knows no better bless him). I knew any baker of bundts was a friend of mine. Trove went onto 'the list'.

Fast forward... My husband was spending the day in Manchester with some mates, and if I stayed at home, would have been hutch-bound and one very grumpy Dolly. That's when it came to me... I would get on the train with him, but go on a daring expedition... I am not a fan of dining alone, but I was willing to make an exception - they had cake dammit!

Three trains later, I found myself in sunny Levenshulme. A five minute walk from the train station lies Trove; a little haven on a bustling road full of odd shops and people driving too quickly. It feels a little out of place, but as soon as you step inside you are transported to the type of establishment you may expect of Chorlton or Didsbury. Is this a sign that Levenshulme is next for the cool kids...? I've heard their market is a bit of a corker too.
Trove, Levenshulme
There are no overbuttered teacakes or greasy fry-ups here. Trove pride themselves on homemade bread, organic jams and fresh cakes. Although I was starved, the warm waft of fresh bread made me want something on a white bloomer.

Apple and rhubarb juice: an absolute bargain at £1.40 for a decent sized carafe. This was mind boggling stuff! Sweet, tangy and very refreshing. No juice will ever taste as good again. They also had fresh cherry juice too, which I was strangely intrigued by, but in my haste forgot to order later on. Buffoon.
Trove, Levenshulme - juice
Mellow cheddar with red onion marmalade and thyme: I'll be honest with you. When this rocked up with quinoa, I was a bit put out. Trust me - this works. The bloomer was soft with a chewy crust, the cheese generous and creamy, and lashing of home made onion marmalade did the trick. However, the star of the show was the cinnamon quinoa with dried fruit and toasted almonds. Gee whizz this combo is outstanding.
Trove, Levenshulme - sandwich
Hot chocolate: I saw someone else having a hot drink with a van on it... I wanted one too... Any establishment that puts a van on their drinks shall be considered friends.
Trove, Levenshulme - hot chocolate
Blackberry financier: I was giddy as a kipper when I saw these. My all time favourite dessert was a financier. I'm a sucker for anything with a ground almond base: that sticky top, soft crumb and moist finish. Pop fruit in it and you're onto a winner. I prevented myself from buying more to take home. I pined for them all evening.
Trove, Levenshulme - financier
I adored Trove. I loved the people, the window seat where I could watch the world go by, the fact they served cinnamon based grains with my sandwich and of course the wonderful choice of cakes. Trove is a happy little shop full of happy people.

Bouchon, Las Vegas

Bouchon, Las Vegas
On our first morning in Las Vegas we decided to head for the Venetian for a toot at the gondolas and hunt down one of the best breakfasts the Strip has to offer. Bouchon is a bistro owned by Thomas Keller; the culinary wizard behind The French Laundry in Yountville and is situated in the hotel part of the Venetian, away from the crowds in the Mall.

Bouchon, Las VegasYou cannot make a reservation for breakfast, and we had heard that there is sometimes a long queue for a table. With this in mind we went at about 9am (by which time it was already 28 C outside) in the hope we wouldn't have to wait too long. There was no queue at all! Apparently 9am is early... We were greeted by a friendly waitress and taken into the main seating area via a stunning tiled walk way. Everything is beautifully finished, and definitely feels more European than American. We had the choice of sitting outside (on the air conditioned balcony) or inside. We remained inside just because it was so nice.

The menu is extensive, ranging from a full English type breakfast to the more continental choices. Everything is home made including the pastries, butter and preserves.

Our waiter was fantastic. He was really chatty (and seemed to know an awful lot about Manchester) but was not intrusive. He asked us about our plans so we told him of the excitement brewing about visiting The French Laundry later in the week.

We chose the Breakfast Américaine and Bouchon French Toast. This didn't sound like a lot of food when we ordered it, nor did it appear a breakfast behemoth like those at Dottie's. However, it was unbelievably filling!

Our menu choices:

  • Breakfast Américaine: two eggs any style served with bacon, country sausage & toasted brioche & a pecan sticky bun.
  • Bouchon French Toast: bread pudding style with warm layers of brioche, custard & apples served with maple syrup.
  • Fresh orange juice, breakfast tea & Bouchon blend coffee.

Wow. This breakfast was epic. Everything in sight was rich and packed with flavour. The bacon was maple smoked, anything bread based was actually brioche, the apples were stewed in cinnamon, the massive pecan bun was covered in sugar syrup and even the jams were full of fruit. Coffee, tea and orange juice were all refilled regularly too.

This was one of my favourite breakfasts ever. Go to Bouchon if you want relaxed dining with a flash of finesse. They also serve brunch, lunch and dinner. Well worth a trip if you're on the Strip...
